Over the last 14 years I have traveled to 18 countries, and all 7 continents, running marathons so that I can raise $100k for kidney cancer research in memory of my brother John who lost his battle with kidney cancer on February 27, 1999. While I was in the 18 countries my mission was to bring awareness about kidney cancer to as many people as possible. My approach to bringing worldwide awareness about kidney cancer was to first find out if the people that I met knew anything about kidney cancer if they did not know I would give them the basic facts about the disease as well as the latest statistics concerning kidney cancer.
When I left the country I was in I always left my signed calling card with the people that I met to ensure that they would remember our discussion about kidney cancer and to spread the word to their family and friends about this deadly disease. My calling card consists of my worldwide marathons logo surrounded by my photos of the 14 countries that I have committed to finish marathons in – I have finished 13 and Copenhagen, Denmark on May 20th will be number 14. Over the last 8 years I have left over 150 of my signed calling cards in countries that I have visited. In 2010 I gave an 8×10 framed and signed photo to the Mayor of Cape Town South Africa as a gift commemorating finishing my 6th continent in Cape Town.
Bob’s Calling Card
To show how widespread kidney cancer is – over the last 2 months I have received Tweets from people who are presently living with kidney cancer [either in remission or treatment], know someone who has kidney cancer or has a family member who has died from kidney cancer. These wonderful and caring people come from California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Africa, Australia, Canada, and England.
Kidney Cancer is truly a worldwide and deadly disease.
