Worldwide Marathons for kidney cancer – September Update

October 2, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

September Donations Update:

September was a good month for donations to my worldwide marathons for kidney cancer charity in memory of my brother John. Because of the generosity of Jean, Gregory, Jane, Titcomb’s, Jon, Christian, and Annette I was able to raise $1,206.00 for the month of September. I have now raised a 14 year total of $90,001.00 and I am closing in on my 14 year goal to raise $100k for kidney cancer research – I now only need to raise $9,999.00 over the next 90 days. I am so close to the goal but I do not have much time to make it – any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

September Training/Race Miles Run Update:

September was not a good month for running as I spent the last 3 weeks recovering from a very painful knee injury that I received on a 15 mile long run.  The injury was so bad that I had to cancel my Long Beach, CA marathon on October 7th. My September and 14 year total training/race miles run totals are as follows:

Septenber miles run = 68 miles

14 year total training/race miles run = 24,492 miles

Needed to meet circumference of earth [24,901.5] miles run by 12/31/012 = 409 miles

Have a great day,

Bob

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Kidney Tumor Program

September 27, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

I am writing this blog to give you information about the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center [BIDMC] where 100% of my charities donations are used for kidney cancer research. I feel that it is very important for my donors to know as much as possible about BIDMC and its efforts to find a cure for kidney cancer.

BIDMC is a world-class leader in kidney cancer treatment and research. Among the first in New England to offer a multidisciplinary team dedicated to kidney cancer, BIDMC is:

  • The lead site for the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center [DF/HCC] kidney cancer program.
  • The lead reipient of the prestigious National Cancer Institute-funded kidney cancer SPORE grant.

Lead Site

A founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. BIDMC offers access to the most advanced and promising therapies for kidney cancer through clinical trials, research breakthroughs, and novel surgical and non-invasive treatments.

Spore Grant

The National Cancer Institute [NCI] recently awarded BIDMC and DF/HCC an $11.5 million, five year SPORE [Specialized Program of Research Excllence] grant. SPORE grants promote collaboration among researchers and physicians, and help move scientific discoveries from the laboratory to the bedside as quickly as possible.

Multidisciplinary Team

BIDMC is one of the only multidisciplinary kidney cancer centers in the Northeast. The unique approach means that you see not just one doctor, but rather an entire team of kidney cancer specialists. Experts in their respective fields, the team includes medical oncologists, kidney surgeons, radiation oncologists, social workers and psychiatrists. This integrated approach to evaluation and treatment enhances diagostic accuracy and gives the patient the broadest range of treatment alternatives.

Collection of Experts

BIDMC offers an unusual concentration of kidney specialists – four renowned medical oncologists and fellowship-trained surgeons, among others who are drawn to BIDMC because of their leadership in the field of kidney cancer research.

Advanced Surgical Technique

BIDMC is at the vanguard of minimally invasive surgical care and research for kidney cancer. BIDMC offers laparoscopic surgery for the vast majority of kidney tumors, removing the tumor and either the entire kidney or just part of the kidney. In the past, kidney surgery required a long incision and hospitalization, and months of recovery, which could delay the start of lifesaving drugs to help prevent cancer recurrence. With laparoscopic and robotic kidney surgery, there is less pain and a shorter recovery, so you can begin drug therapy more quickly if needed [within weeks instead of months], to reduce the chance for cancer spread.

High Volume Expertise

The breadth and volume of kidney cancer surgery at BIDMC is second to none. BIDMC performs some 100 to 150 kidney-cancer surgeries annually, and most of the surgeries are minimal invasive. Because BIDMC sees a large volume of advanced kidney cancers, they are especially skilled at removing large tumors laparoscopically, even very large tumors that are starting to invade surrounding structures.

Promising New Medical Treatments

Clinical trials have led to unprecedented progress in kidney cancer treatment, with new drugs that prolong survival and improve quality of life.

Compassionate Care

An important part of what makes BIDMC so special is the way they care for the patient and the family. BIDMC respects the dignity, values, needs and opinions of each patient they are privileged to treat and treats the patient and the family with respect, kindness, compassion and patienc.

Bob Rebello’s Worldwide Marathons Newsletter – August 2012 Edition

September 8, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

  • About 64,770 new cases of kidney cancer [40,250 men & 24,520 women] will occur in the United States in 2012.
  • Worldwide 200,000 individuals are alive with kidney cancer & 100,000 will die of kidney cancer each year.

My life’s purpose over the last 14 years was to bring worldwide awareness about kidney cancer and to raise $100k for kidney cancer research in memory of my brother, and best friend, John. In 1999 after my brother John passed away, I made a commitment to the team of doctors at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who were studying and making scientific advances in kidney cancer that I would raise $100k by December 31, 2012 to support their research efforts. With only 125 days remaining until December 31st a 14 year total of $88,795.00 has been donated and we are only $11,205.00 away from meeting the $100k commitment that I made to the team of doctors who have dedicated themselves to finding a cure for kidney cancer. One example of recent insights that the donations have made possible, has been an improved understanding of the interactions between a kidney tumor and the patient’s immune system. This knowledge has shed light onto why many immunotherapies are often ineffective. The final $11,205.00 will be used to fund the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center team of doctors to continue their research efforts and to make advances in the fight against kidney cancer.

Over the last 14 years I have received hundreds of notes of support and encouragement from people from all over the United States who have donated to kidney cancer research. I just want you to know how much I appreciate the notes you sent to me and that I saved every one of the notes and I put them in a Scrap Book that I made up – so if you sent me a note over the last 14 years, it meant a lot to me, and it now is in my Scrap Book.

Listed below are some of the many notes that were sent to me over the last 14 years from donors who have been effected by kidney cancer. These notes and many others that I have received are what motivate me to train year round and to finish all of my worldwide marathons. When I read the notes that I get from people with kidney cancer or are effected by the disease they inspire me to do whatever I can to bring worldwide awareness about kidney cancer and to raise $100k for kidney cnacer research.

From Janet – KY [2012]: I read your article in the recent Digital Alumni Magazine. My mom also died from Renal Cancer so your cause is extra special to me. Glad to help.

From John – MA [2008]: Next week I start chemo treatment for advanced renal CA at Dr Michael Atkins clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess. Thanks for your efforts to get dollars into his program. I have been impressed with the clinical staff during the work-up. I anticipate the same during the treatment with IL-2.

From Allison - NE [2008]: Bob I am happy to help. I learned recently that my dad has metastic kidney cancer. He had his left kidney removed a few weeks ago and will start on a drug called Sutent next week. I appreciate so much all the work you’ve done to raise money in memory of your brother. I too am a marathon runner so when I found your website Iwas thrilled. Please keep up your wonderful work and know that people like me are grateful to you and your brother for helping to make new research possible.

From Liz – GA [2006]: My husband was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with kidney cancer. My husband is 42 and we have 3 little ones 1,3, and 8. With research and hopefully great Dr’s on our team, I plan on him being here with me when the kids graduate from high school. I just wanted to say thank you and I will make a donation tonight. Good luck on your next marathon.

From Gene – CA [2003]: I appreciate that your efforts are being made for a meaningful cause. One of our best East Coast friends, a mother of four in her late-thirties, just last month completed five years since losing a kidney to the disease, and she is a great example of what can be accomplished in the field. After a rigorous treatment and recovery process she’s now setting an awesome example of being a great mother and wife.

From Joe – MA [2000]: My brother, Paul had a cancerous kidney removed about 3 years ago, but he has recovered well. He will get tratment for lesions in the bladder but so far, everything is okay.

From Joyce – MA [1999]: My father is currently being treated for kidney cancer – he only recently was referred to Beth Israel Deaconess. I am going to see if my father can get a consultation with Dr Michael B. Atkins. I thank you not only for running the US Marine Corps marathon for a good cause, but also for providing our family with some potentially useful information. I will spread the word about your fund raising effort.

Have a great day,

Bob

Copenhagen Marathon Medal

Copenhagen Marathon Medal

I am very happy to report that I finished the Copenhagen marathon on May 20th, in a time of 5:51 at 75 years young. Copenhagen was my 18th worldwide marathon in 14 countries in 14 years for kidney cancer research. Although I finished the marathon and met my 1999 commitment to finish 14 marathons in 14 different countries in 14 years I was not a “Happy Camper” when I finally crossed the finish line. It was a miserable day to run 26.2 miles as the weather on the day of the marathon was in the 80’s and I was still suffering from jet lag which made it very difficult to meet my finish time goal of 4:41[2013 Boston marathon qualifying time for my age group]. After having finished 17 marathons I have learned that every marathon is different and each one of them have their own challenges – some more difficult than others. I chose the Copenhagen marathon because it was a very flat course and I did not want to run a hilly course because my knee that I injured in the Antarctica marathon was still bothering me. I also chose it because the weather during the last 2 Copenhagen marathons was cool with clouds and drizzle which is ideal weather to run a marathon. As advertised the course was as flat as a “Pancake’ but the weather was not as advertised it was in the mid to high 80’s throughout the race with little or no shade. At mile 13 my time was 2:22 and if I kept that pace up I would finish in a time of 4:44 which would be 3 minutes over my marathon goal of 4:41. After mile 13 the heat and jet lag started to get to me and my pace started to really slow down. At mile 18 my time was 3:52 with a chance to finish a little over 5 hours but I could not overcome the oppressive heat and jet lag – it took me 2 hours to run 8 miles – looking back I was very fortunate to finish the marathon.

What I learned from my May 26th Copenhagen Marathon:If you put in a 100% effort during your marathon training and… fb.me/DCnn039c

— Bob Rebello (@bobrebello) June 5, 2012

My last marathon for my charity will be a ”Surprise” marathon that I will run in December. When I cross the finish line I will have run 24,926.2 training and race miles over the last 14 years which will meet my commitment [#4].

I need your help to get me across the $100k finish line by 12/31/2012 – I need to raise $14.5k over the next 7 months to meet my commitment to raise $100k for kidney cancer research. I would greatly appreciate it if you would help me by donating to this very worthy charity today. To ensure that all of the money raised goes directly to kidney cancer research I pay all expenses required to run the charity. If your company has a Matching Gifts Program I encourage you to use the program to help in the fight against kidney cancer. 100% of your generous tax-deductible donation will go to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Biologic Therapy Research Program and will be placed in the kidney cancer research fund in memory of John Rebello. My 5/26/012 speech at UCSD & Kidney Cancer Video

June 7, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

UCSD BITS [Business Ideas to Share] Conference Speech – May 26, 2012

After returning to San Diego at 11:30am on May 23rd from Copenhagen, Denmark I only had two days to prepare for my May 26th speech that I will be giving to the UCSD BITS Conference. The conference was hosted by Alpha Kappa Psi the leading business organization at UCSD – the theme of the conference was Professional and Personal Growth. BITS is an opportunity for students who are interested in other fields to be exposed to the different industries of business and technology. The students did an outstanding job organizing the conference and ensuring that all 12 of the speakers had everything that they needed to give their speech. Prior to the start of the conference I had the opportunity to meet and talk to a number of the students and was very impressed with them. I would like to thank Benjamin Liu and Elizabeth Koleong for all of your help prior to, and during, the conference.

My speech was about my life’s Purpose to remember my brother, and best friend, John and the 14-year challenging Commitments that I made to my life’s purpose and how I had the Persistence to overcome all of the injuries, obstacles, and roadblocks that I faced over the 14-years to ensure the Success of my life’s purpose.

Purpose + Commitment + Persistence = Success

2 Weeks To Go Until My Copenhagen Marathon

April 26, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

Over the last 14 years I have traveled to 18 countries, and all 7 continents, running marathons so that I can raise $100k for kidney cancer research in memory of my brother John who lost his battle with kidney cancer on February 27, 1999. While I was in the 18 countries my mission was to bring awareness about kidney cancer to as many people as possible. My approach to bringing worldwide awareness about kidney cancer was to first find out if the people that I met knew anything about kidney cancer if they did not know I would give them the basic facts about the disease as well as the latest statistics concerning kidney cancer.

When I left the country I was in I always left my signed calling card with the people that I met to ensure that they would remember our discussion about kidney cancer and to spread the word to their family and friends about this deadly disease. My calling card consists of my worldwide marathons logo surrounded by my photos of the 14 countries that I have committed to finish marathons in – I have finished 13 and Copenhagen, Denmark on May 20th will be number 14. Over the last 8 years I have left over 150 of my signed calling cards in countries that I have visited. In 2010 I gave an 8×10 framed and signed photo to the Mayor of Cape Town South Africa as a gift commemorating finishing my 6th continent in Cape Town.

Bob Rebello's Calling Card

Bob’s Calling Card

To show how widespread kidney cancer is  – over the last 2 months I have received Tweets from people who are presently living with kidney cancer [either in remission or treatment], know someone who has kidney cancer or has a family member who has died from kidney cancer. These wonderful and caring people come from California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Africa, Australia, Canada, and England.

Kidney Cancer is truly a worldwide and deadly disease.

How Much Do You Know About Kidney Cancer?

April 5, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

Today’s blog will be about the kidneys and the 2011 kidney cancer statistics. I also will give you an update on my 14-year commitments.

What is kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer is a cancer that starts in the kidneys. To understand more about kidney cancer, it helps to know about the normal structure and function of the kidneys.

About the kidneys

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist and weighing about 4 to 5 ounces. They are fixed to the upper back wall of the abdominal cavity. One kidney is just to the left and the other just to the right of the spine. Both are protected by the lower ribcage.

The kidney’s main job is to filter the blood to remove excess water, salt, and waste products. These substances become urine. Urine travels from the kidneys to the bladder through long slender tubes called ureters. The place where the ureter meets the kidney is called the renal pelvis. The urine is stored in the bladder until you urinate.

The kidneys also help to make sure the body has enough red blood cells. It does this by making a hormone called erythropoietin, which tells the bone marrow to make more red blood cells.

Our kidneys are important, but we actually need less than one complete kidney to function. Tens of thousands of people in the United States are living normal healthy lives with just one kidney. Some people may not have any working kidneys at all, and survive with the help of a medical procedure called dialysis. Dialysis uses a specially designed machine that filters the blood like a real kidney would.

2011 kidney cancer statistics [Reference: National Cancer Institute]

  1. There is no known absolute cause for the development of kidney cancer and no known absolute cure for kidney cancer.
  2. 60,920 were diagnosed with kidney cancer [37,120 men and 23,800 women] and 13,120 died of the disease.
  3. There are currently 296,074 individuals living today in the US with kidney cancer
  4. The median age of diagnosis is 64 and the median age of death is 71.
  5. Based on current rates, 1.5% of men and women born today will be diagnosed with kidney cancer in their lifetime.

  1. Answer questions that my readers have asked me about my 14 years of running marathons around the world.
  2. Update my readers on the status of the 14-year commitments that I made in 1999.
  3. Let my readers know “What’s next for Bob Rebello – 2013 and beyond?”

Today’s Blog will focus on 1 question, and an update on the status of my 14-year commitments.

Question:  How is your 20 week Copenhagen Marathon Training Program going?

I am in the 12th week of my 20 week 550 mile training program for the Copenhagen marathon and everything is going as I planned. I have not missed any days of training and my knee that I injured in last year’s Antarctica marathon has not been a problem during and after my training runs. I am running all of my important long runs on Saturday mornings in Coronado because it is a very flat course – there are no hills or cement which is the same type of course that I will run in Copenhagen [Flat as a Pancake] . I start my long runs at 9:30 in the morning which is the same time as the start time of the Copenhagen marathon.

On March 17th I finished a 12 mile long run under some difficult weather conditions – wind and rain – finishing in an average time of 45 seconds slower than my marathon pace. My Saturday long run schedule for the next 8 weeks will start to get a little more difficult as I approach the marathon on May 20th. The schedule starting on March 24th is as follows: 18, 20, 12, 20, 12, 20, 12, and 8 miles. My goal on each of my long runs is to run at least 3 miles at marathon pace and to finish in an average time of 30 seconds slower than my marathon pace.

My weekly Copenhagen training program consists of the following:

M: Cross train 2 Hours [Stationary bike for 1 hour, weights and core/leg exercises for 1 hour].

T: Speed Runs: [8x1/2 mile @8:45 pace]

W: Intervals [4 miles @ marathon pace]

TH: Easy Run [6 miles with 3 miles @ marathon pace]

F: Cross train 2 Hours [Stationary bike for 1 hour, weights and core/leg exercises for 1 hour].

S: Long Run at 30 seconds slower than marathon pace.

S: Rest

Week 7 [2/20/012 to 2/26/012] Of My 14th, And Final Year, For Kidney Cancer Research

March 1, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

Over the next 10 months I will use my weekly Blog to:

  1. Answer questions that my readers have asked me about my 14 years of running marathons around the world.
  2. Update my readers on the status of the 14-year commitments that I made in 1999.
  3. Let my readers know “What’s next for Bob Rebello – 2013 and beyond?”

Today’s Blog will focus on 1 question, an update on the status of my 14-year commitments, and what’s next – 2013 and beyond.

Question: What do I do to keep myself “busy” now that I am 75 years old and “retired”?

To answer the question – I am not retired and I will not be retiring anytime in the near or extended future.

Over the years that question seems to always come up when I get in conversations with people that I just met. The first question they always ask me is how old I am – once they find out that I am 75 years “young” they naturally assume that I am retired – taking it easy – and enjoying my retirement years. I have always felt that my age was nothing but a number – and right now my number is 75 and my number will change to 76 on May 23, 2012.

What’s next for Bob Rebello – 2013 and beyond?

Right now I am approaching the finish line on a fantastic 14 year adventure running marathons around the world for kidney cancer. My adventure will end in December of 2012 when I cross the finish line at my 19th, and final, worldwide marathon. This will not be my last adventure as I plan on continuing to run marathons as well as doing my first Triathlon. I am presently in the process of starting two new businesses, writing a book about my adventures and working as a motivational speaker. Over the next few months I will be speaking to the BUMP.COM [www.bump.com] team on 2/29/012 and at UCSD on 5/26/012.

What has kept me motivated over the last 14 years is:

Purpose + Commitment + Persistence = Success

Week 6 [2/13/012 to 2/19/012] Of My 14th, And Final Year, For Kidney Cancer Research

February 17, 2012 By Bob Leave a Comment

Over the next 11 months I will use my weekly Blog to:

  1. Answer questions that my readers have asked me about my 14 years of running marathons around the world.
  2. Update my readers on the status of the 14-year commitments that I made in 1999.
  3. Let my readers know “What’s next for Bob Rebello – 2013 and beyond”.

Today’s Blog will focus on 1 question and an update on the status of my 14-year commitments.

Question: Have I ever belonged to a running club or running group?

I have been very fortunate to have belonged to two really great running groups over the last 14 years that I have been running worldwide marathons. The two running groups that I belonged to were the “Concord Runners” [www.concordrunners.org] of Concord Massachusetts and the “Running Group” of San Diego California [www.runwithgreg.com].

Concord Runners: [See photo below]

I was very fortunate to run with the Concord runners for 4 years from 1997 to 2001 when I lived in Lexington, Massachusetts. The concord runners are an informal group of men and women runners who meet every Saturday morning at 8:00am at the historic Monument Square in downtown Concord, Massachusetts. When I first started running with the Concord Runners in 1997 I was 62 years “young” and was just starting to run about 10 miles a week as a way to improve my overall health – I was a physical wreck – 20+ pounds overweight. Because of the time, and kindness that many of the runners gave me I was able to learn from their training experiences and with their help I was able to put together my first half marathon training program. The first half marathon that I did while with the Concord Runners was the New Bedford half marathon on March 15, 1998 – I finished but was not very happy with my finish time of 2:35 [Pace=11:49]. After the race I discussed my race results with some of the runners during our Saturday run and from their inputs I put together a new half marathon training program that I would use for my next half marathon race. My next half marathon was the May 13, 2000 Quechee, Vermont Covered Bridge half marathon which I finished in a time of 1:51 [Pace=8:28] which made me very happy as I improved my finish time by 44 minutes. During the time between the half marathons [1998 to 2000] I ran a total of six 10k races finishing in an average time of 52.14 [8:24 Pace]. On October 24, 1999 I ran the USMC marathon, my first worldwide marathon for kidney cancer, and thanks to the advice I received from the Concord Runners I was able to finish the marathon in a time of 4:39 [Pace = 10:28]. Again I sought out advice on how I could improve my marathon finish time and put together a new marathon training program for my next marathon.

My next worldwide marathon was in Dublin, Ireland on October 30, 2000 where I finished in a time of 4:09 [Pace = 9:30] an improvement of 30 minutes over my first marathon.

Because of the Saturday runs with the Concord Runners I was able to not only greatly improve my finishing times for all of my races but also improve my health as I lost about 20 pounds over the 4 years with the group. I am still in contact with a number of my Concord Runner friends and when I stop by Boston to see my daughter on my return trips from my worldwide marathons I try to attend their Saturday morning runs. I miss the people, the runs in the snow and the breakfasts after the runs – just a wonderful group of people.

The Running Group:

I moved to LaJolla, California from Lexington, Massachusetts in June of 2001 and immediately started training for my 3rd worldwide marathon – the Medoc, France marathon on September 8, 2001. I spent quite a bit of time looking for a running group to join – all of the groups I found were very competitive groups – I was looking for an informal group like the Concord Runners.

A week after I returned from the Medoc marathon I was sitting in front of the local Starbucks on a Saturday morning wearing my Medoc finishers jersey when someone noticed the jersey and told me that one his running group friends had also finished the Medoc marathon. He invited me to his running group’s breakfast after their Saturday morning run, introduced me to the runners and invited me to join the running group. I started running with the group the next Saturday and continued to run with the group for the next 9 years – up to 2009.

During those years I ran my fastest marathon to date when I finished the March 3, 2003 NAPA Valley, California marathon in a time of 4:02 [age 67]. My finish time was good enough for me to qualify for the 2004 Boston marathon. I also ran my fastest half marathon to date when I finished the January 18, 2004 San Diego half marathon in a time of 1:49 [age 68].

Over those 9 years I made a lot of new friends who I still stay in contact with.

Commitments Update:

As you can see from my 14-year commitments status I have not received any new donations since my last week’s update – my 14-year total is still at $83,905.00 – if you would like to join the 1,086 people who have donated over the last 14 years please click here.
