Copenhagen Marathon Medal

I am very happy to report that I finished the Copenhagen marathon on May 20th, in a time of 5:51 at 75 years young. Copenhagen was my 18th worldwide marathon in 14 countries in 14 years for kidney cancer research. Although I finished the marathon and met my 1999 commitment to finish 14 marathons in 14 different countries in 14 years I was not a “Happy Camper” when I finally crossed the finish line. It was a miserable day to run 26.2 miles as the weather on the day of the marathon was in the 80’s and I was still suffering from jet lag which made it very difficult to meet my finish time goal of 4:41[2013 Boston marathon qualifying time for my age group]. After having finished 17 marathons I have learned that every marathon is different and each one of them have their own challenges – some more difficult than others. I chose the Copenhagen marathon because it was a very flat course and I did not want to run a hilly course because my knee that I injured in the Antarctica marathon was still bothering me. I also chose it because the weather during the last 2 Copenhagen marathons was cool with clouds and drizzle which is ideal weather to run a marathon. As advertised the course was as flat as a “Pancake’ but the weather was not as advertised it was in the mid to high 80’s throughout the race with little or no shade. At mile 13 my time was 2:22 and if I kept that pace up I would finish in a time of 4:44 which would be 3 minutes over my marathon goal of 4:41. After mile 13 the heat and jet lag started to get to me and my pace started to really slow down. At mile 18 my time was 3:52 with a chance to finish a little over 5 hours but I could not overcome the oppressive heat and jet lag – it took me 2 hours to run 8 miles – looking back I was very fortunate to finish the marathon.

What I learned from my May 26th Copenhagen Marathon:If you put in a 100% effort during your marathon training and… fb.me/DCnn039c

My last marathon for my charity will be a ”Surprise” marathon that I will run in December. When I cross the finish line I will have run 24,926.2 training and race miles over the last 14 years which will meet my commitment [#4].

I need your help to get me across the $100k finish line by 12/31/2012 – I need to raise $14.5k over the next 7 months to meet my commitment to raise $100k for kidney cancer research. I would greatly appreciate it if you would help me by donating to this very worthy charity today. To ensure that all of the money raised goes directly to kidney cancer research I pay all expenses required to run the charity. If your company has a Matching Gifts Program I encourage you to use the program to help in the fight against kidney cancer. 100% of your generous tax-deductible donation will go to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Biologic Therapy Research Program and will be placed in the kidney cancer research fund in memory of John Rebello. Donations will be accepted up to December 31, 2012.
